What Makes It Special: Bougainvillea pergolas
Al Shamal City Park is one of the more spacious parks in Qatar but it’s location in the far north of the country prevents many people from visiting. And it probably isn’t a park you’d intentionally drive out of your way for. But should you want a little variety and a small excursion in your walking routine, grab a few friends for a brisk jaunt on the paths criss-crossing the grounds. Don’t miss the bougainvillea pergolas to the south of the park entrance.
Start your walk at the dry water fountain just at the entrance then weave beneath old palm trees, among bougainvillea pergolas and across grass lawns. Vegetation is designed so that many semi-private areas are formed making nice picnic spots. It’s age gives it a flaking, yet charming, patina. Like anything aging it is best viewed by the dimming light of dusk.
Some of the older play equipment requires a parent’s discerning eye. Newer, and subsequently safer, play areas are located to the right of the entrance. Some benches are available but they aren’t always convenient for watching children at the playground. Take a blanket or beach chair to sit on.
Contrary to popular belief some parks do allow bachelors to use the facilities. While the location of Shamal Park is rather inconvenient, this park thankfully doesn’t stop the busloads of manual laborers who come to enjoy their Friday off in the park.
TIP: No matter the time of day don’t go alone if you’re female. Take a few friends. Stop at Iskendar Pasha in town to grab a picnic lunch. Try the “Kofta Meat Sandwich”. It’s lamb and it’s fine.
