18 Ways kids in Qatar can say no to boredom this summer
After a dusty, hot and dry start, the summer is officially upon us. Most people go away this season, however for the many people who have children, keeping them entertained might be a tough job. There are so many different things your kids can get involved in around Qatar this year – arts, crafts, sports activities and so much more. They can learn new skills as well as meet other kids in the process. Here are some suggestions…
1. English for Young Learners (British Council Qatar)
The British Council in Qatar is offering a summer school version of its year-round English for Young Learners Programme in two 10-week sessions. The programme comprises an interactive and engaging yet challenging method for teaching essential English reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to non-English speakers. Courses are offered in progressive levels divided into three age groups: 7-10 years (Junior), 11-14 years (Senior) and 15-17 years (Young Adult).
The programme typically includes 30 hours of classroom time with 1.5 hours of classes, four days a week from Sunday to Wednesday. Students will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course.
Course fee: QR2200 + placement test fee QR50
The dates for the Summer Young Learners Programme are as follows:
Summer Session 1: July 13 – August 7, 2013 (Register between July 6 & 11, 2013)

2. Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar’s (VCU-Q) Summer Programme
VCU-Q is offering four different Summer Art programmes for children aged 8 years and above: Art Exploration for children aged 8 to 10 – ‘Mini Masterpieces’; Art Exploration for children aged 11 and 12 – ‘Mini Masterpieces’; Creative Discovery for High School Students aged 13 to 15; and Design Intensive for High School Students aged 16 and above. All courses are taught by creative professionals with a wide background of experience in each of their areas.
Art Exploration for children aged 8 to 10 – ‘Mini Masterpieces’: During this course, students will participate in creative activities by exploring a variety of media. At the end of the weeklong course, there will be a group exhibition as well as drawing, painting and collage along with experimentation with different art materials as well as a visit to the Mathaf museum.
Course dates: July 7-11, 2013, Sunday through Thursday (5 days)

Creative Discovery for High School Students aged 13 to 15: This course offers students an introduction to art and design using different art materials – painting, drawing, illustrating, printing and using computer graphics programs. They will also gain an understanding of how to look at different art forms during visits to Mathaf museum. Class activities will include various creativity and artistic thinking exercises, which will need to be applied to a final art project.
Course dates: July 7-18, 2013, Monday to Thursday (10 days)

Design Intensive for High School Students aged 16 and above: This course offers an introduction to art and design through daily creative exercises in painting, drawing, mixed media, dyeing, computer graphics and photography. The course will also provide a general overview of different design fields such as fashion, graphics, interiors as well as printmaking and art history.
Course dates: June 30 – July 18, 2013, Sunday through Thursday (15 days)

3. Qatar Milestone Training Solutions’ (QMTS) Junior Leader Programme
QMTS is organising a two-week Junior Leader Programme for children between the ages of 7 and 12 years. Based on self-help book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, this programme is meant to teach children leadership skills to promote higher academic achievement, fewer discipline issues and better communication and engagement between children, their parents and teachers.
There are two separate sessions for this programme with the first one between June 23 and July 7 and the second one between August 18 and 2013.
QMTS is located on Ahmed bin Hanbel Street in the Old Airport Area. Classes will run for three hours a day from either 9am to 12 noon or from 12.30pm to 3.30pm. The fee for the programme is QR2300 per child. The capacity of each class is 9 children.
For two children, the discounted fee is QR2,185 per child and for three or more children, the fee will be QR2,150 per child. For more than two children, parents can receive a 10-20% discount on the fee.

4. QMotion’s Kids in Motion Summer Camp 2013
This summer camp for kids of ages between 4 and 12 years will involve many activities including swimming; arts & crafts; beach activities (including kayaking and beach sports); workshops in cooking, music, games etc.; martial arts and lots more.
The Camp will run from June 30 through August 1 from 8am to 1pm.
The fee schedule per week is as follows for QMotion members and non-members:

5. Tribe Bookstore Summer Workshops
For a creative summer, kids can now learn to draw and colour their own manga characters and to creatively scrapbook photos by attending the workshops organized by Tribe Bookstore at Education City’s Student Center.
The Manga Drawing workshops are for kids between 10 and 13 years on June 14 and 21 from 6-8pm and the registration fee is QR300.
The Scrapbooking workshop is for kids aged 13 years and above on June 18 from 6-8pm. The registration fee is QR200.
Both workshops will take place within Tribe Bookstore.

6. Starfish Lane Kids Nursery
Expect a fun and enjoyable summer for your kids who fall between 1 and 4 years of age with Starfish Lane Nursery’s fun Summer Programme2013. This year’s programme has a ‘Around the World in 30 Days’ theme during which children will participate in activities such as yoga, beach parties, sand & aqua play, dance, cooking as well as arts & crafts. The nurseries accommodate between 30 and 55 students in each location and have sleeping and soft play areas too. Children must bring their own snacks and diapers. All the staff at the nurseries is well-trained pediatric first aiders.
The programme will run everyday between June 30 and August 1 from 7am to 2pm in two of the four Starfish Lane Nursery locations, near Al Jelaiah (near College of the North Atlantic Qatar) and in near the Salwa Wholesale Market.

7. Bambinos Summer Camp 2013
Bambinos’ Summer Camp 2013 is eight weeks of summer learning and fun for kids aged between 1 and 4 years. Each week, there will be new and fun things to learn and participate in including activities that involve ceramic crafts, recycling, instruction on eating, puppets and theatre and lots more. Hours of the daily camp are from 7.30am through 3.30pm.
The registration fee is QR300. The programme fee can be paid either through a weekly fee of QR700 or QR2500 per month. The Summer Camp runs between July 16 and August 8, 2013.
8. Perles d’Avenir Summer Programme 2013
Kids between 2 months and 4 years can enjoy one or more weeks of their summer learning new skills or enjoying the company of other kids close to their age at Perles d’Avenir Nursery. Each week has a fun theme including 1001 Night, Kingdom of Pearls, Cowboys and Indians, Disco Years, Pirates, Jungles etc. The medium of communication is French here.
The programme will run between June 30 and August 21. Parents can choose to enroll their kids in the nursery for one week or longer for a fee of QR800 per week. There is a 5% discount on the fees if kids are enrolled for more than one week. Activities include cooking, water play, painting, music, arts & crafts, music and a lot more. Regular hours are 7am to 2pm, however extensions are available from 6.30am to 5pm.
9. Sherborne Qatar School
The Summer Multi Activity Week 2013 at Sherborne Qatar is a short programme of fun for kids aged between 4 and 13 years. The programme runs between June 30 and July 4 from 8am to 2pm for QR1,250 per child per week or QR300 per day (cash only). Cookery, football, rocket launching, making milkshakes, pizzas, baking, dancing, foot painting, parachute games, ice boat making, arts & crafts, dough model making and face painting are some of the many activities available. The programme is guided by qualified teachers from the UK.

10. Regatta Sailing Academy’s Summer School
The Regatta Sailing Academy is offering lessons in dinghy sailing and yachting for teenagers this summer. The programme is divided into four courses: Course 1 (June 30 – July 4), Course 2 (July 7 – July 11), Course 3 (July 14 – July 18) and Course 4 (July 21 – July 25). All of the instruction will take place on the aforementioned dates between 1.30pm and 4.30pm at the Intercontinental Doha Hotel for a fee of QR950 per student.
Students must bring their own towels and a change of clothes. They must wear t-shirts, shorts and a bathing suit.

11. Evolution Soccer
Learn to play soccer and meet other kids who love to play or want to learn too at the Evolution Soccer Camp that runs in two sessions: Session 1 (June 30 – July 11) and Session 2 (July 1 – July 12) from 9am to 1pm at Doha College. The fee per day will be QR150.
The training provided by our qualified and experienced coaches is designed to teach kids of various skill levels and ages to play soccer and to improve their game. 12. Café Ceramique – Summer Camp 2013
Every Saturday from June 1 through July 6 between 11am and 2pm, kids between 4 and 11 years of age can learn and participate in fun activities including crafts, ceramic painting and cooking at Café Ceramique’s Summer Camp. The QR190 per day fee includes food, drinks and the ceramics for the lessons. Cross-activities such as cinnamon roll making, making designs on candles through wax paper are some of the other fun craft activities that will be taught.

13. Park House English School Multi-Activity Summer Camp 2013
From June 30 through July 18, kids between 4 and 10 years of age can participate in a number of fun summer activities offered by the Park House English School. The camp includes four different programmes depending on the ages of the children enrolled. Programmes will include activities such as drama, water play, cooking lessons, Lego and participation in a talent show. Children who enroll will receive a free camp t-shirt and children who agree to participate in all 3 weeks of the camp will be given priority. The programme fee is QR2,100.
14. My Centre Summer Camp 2013
In two summer sessions (Session 1 – June 15 – July 6 and Session 2: August 17 – September 5), My Centre offers children between 5 and 12 years of age lessons in Math, English, IT and Mind Lab training (a form of mental workout that involves performing a variety of games and activities). Students can be enrolled for either a one week, two week or three week programme, classes are three days per week on either Saturday, Monday and Wednesday or Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 3pm to 7 pm.
For the 1-week programme, the fee is QR750, 2-week programme is QR1,300, and the 3-week programme is QR2,000.

15. Northwestern Media Institute Summer Programs
Enroll your high schoolers in a fast-paced learning programme that will offer instruction on different forms of media. Programme fee is QR1,000 and it runs from August 18 to 24, 2013. Fill out this application form and email it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
16. Girls Creativity Centre Summer Art courses for girls
The Girls Creativity Centre in Al Mamoura offers art and crafts workshops for girls 4 days per week (Sunday through Wednesday) for 3 weeks from 9am to 11am for a fee of QR300. 17. Sheraton Doha Summer Camp 2013
Your kids will be busy bees once you enroll them into the summer activities offered by Sheraton Doha. These include swimming, tennis, dancing, painting and much more for kids between 6 and 12 years of age. All of these are taught by experienced and qualified instructors. Kids will receive a t-shirt as well as a certificate at the end of the course.
The camp will run from June 15 through July 20, 2013 from Sunday through Thursday, 9am to 2pm, including lunch.

18. Martial Arts Summer Camp
Your child can train in various martial arts such as Aikido, Judo, Kickboxing, Brazilian JiuJitsu as well as Wrestling, Swimming and Football at Qatar Mixed Martial Arts. Martial Arts help to train children of ages 7 years and above in not just self-defense at an early age but also inculcates self-discipline in them.
