Winners announced for the DCMF cartoon competition
From the 237 humorous entries across 47 different countries, Alby Letoy, Hani Abbas and Abdel Naser Z.M. Al-Jafari were chosen as 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winner respectively of the cartoon competition organised by Doha Centre for Media Freedom (DCMF).
2nd prize: Hani Abbas
3rd prize: Abdel Naser Z.M. Al-Jafari
‘Media Freedom’ was chosen as the theme of this year’s competition to “honour the bravery and creativity of courageous cartoonists around the world”.
The five-member jury was presided presided over by the Director of DCMF, Jan Keulen and comprised some famous cartoonists themselves such as Ali Ferzat, an award-winning Syrian cartoonist; Mohammed Abdullateef, cartoonist from the Qatari newspaper Al Raya, Shujaat Ali, cartoonist at Al Jazeera Network as well as Robert Russell, Executive Director of the Cartoonists Rights Network International.
In a press statement by DCMF, Kuelen was quoted as saying: “Many of the entries we received for the contest depicted the struggle between the media and the powerful; the endless fight between journalists and authorities that don’t want the public to know the truth.”
DCMF has invited the three winners to partake in the World Press Freedom Celebrations on May 1 in Doha. There will also be a cartoon exhibition held on May 1 that will feature the cartoons by the three winners along with 25 other cartoons nominated by the jury.
