What use a ban, if midday break is out in the sun?
It’s 11.55 am on Sunday, the dashboard of my car says it’s 43°C outside. This is the second day of the start of midday work ban, which will be in effect until August 31.
Despite the ban, JustHere saw several worksites where workers were still outside.
Some were still working, while others seemed to have stopped work for a while, but were still under the sun. Some had managed to find a shady spot under the palms.
Qatar’s Labour Law, issued in 2004, prohibits midday works during the intensive high heat of the summer months. Construction firms must ensure that their employees working outdoors take a break between 11 am and 3 pm.
Companies are supposed to provide shaded areas where workers could rest.
Any firm that fails to comply with this rule, risk stiff penalties, including closure of the worksite for a month.
