Qatar aims to break world record with “Mega Marathon”; Registrations begin on Thursday
As part of National Sports Day celebration, Qatar will attempt to break the world record of the ‘Most Runners in a Marathon’.
The Qatar Mega Marathon, under the slogan “RUN WITH QATAR”, is organised under the patronage of H. H. Sheikh Muhammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairman of Al Sadd Sports Club. It will be held on Friday, 6 February 2015 and the Ending Ceremony will be on Tuesday, 10 February 2015 that coincides with the National Sports Day. The four day marathon is an attempt to break the world record of the ‘Most Runners in a Marathon in the World’ based on unprecedented participation of the nationals and expatriates in Qatar.
Interested participants can register for free at kiosks located at Al Sadd Sports Club and all the malls in Qatar starting Thursday, 15 January 2015. Online registration is available here.
In a press statement, Jassim Al-Rumaihi, the General Secretary of Al Sadd Sports Club, said: “This marathon under the slogan ‘RUN WITH QATAR’ is a global event that will be held for the first time in Qatar and the Arab World targeting all segments and all ages of the Qatari society.”
He added: “We attempt through ‘Qatar Mega Marathon’ to realise a huge participation from all segments of the Qatari society and allow Qatar to enter the Guinness World Records for the most runners participating in a marathon, specially that “Qatar Mega Marathon” embodies the true spirit of sport, which holds respect of winning and losing, durability, patience and challenge. Therefore, the goal we aspire to reach doesn’t stop at breaking the world record. If we couldn’t break the record, the honour of the attempt will be enough. We will accept the results with sporting spirit and promise to repeat the attempt.”
