Push to speed up construction of motor city in Qatar
To curb the illegal sale of vehicles in open grounds, the Advisory Council has urged the government in Qatar to speed up construction of the proposed motor city.
Last year, Barwa Real Estate Group had announced the development of a ‘Motor City’ that would include showrooms, garages, service centres and an auction area for used cars in Qatar. The Motor City will be located near Rawdat Rashid, off Salwa Road, and will cover an area of 1.15 million sq.m.
According to a report in The Peninsula, the traffic department has proposed a draft law to ban the sale of vehicles in open grounds or roadside without its approval. However, council members has stressed on the need of alternate venues for auction or sale of used cars before the implementation of the ban.
The sale of cars in public spaces has come under much scrutiny as officials feel “it spoils the image of Qatar”, especially given that Qatar hosts a large number of global conferences every year which are attended by high-profile guests from around the world.
Meanwhile, traffic officials have reported that provisions are being made for parking and sale of heavy vehicles and machineries and equipment in Dukhan, Industrial Area and Shamal as well.
