PHCC hopes to curb smoking with four new cessation clinics
The Primary Health Care Corporation (PHCC) has announced the opening of four new smoking cessation clinics in Al Daayen, Mesaimeer, Omar Bin Kattab and Abu Bakr health centres to encourage more residents to quit smoking.
These clinics are in addition to the first smoking cessation clinic at Al Gharafa Health Centre that has been in operation since 2013. The clinics are headed by trained physicians and nurses who will provide a “tailored approach to behavioural change including counselling and prescribing of smoking cessation medications”, Gulf Times has reported.
According to the 2013 Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) carried out by the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) in collaboration with the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics, there are about 51,000 cigarette smokers and 14,000 shisha smokers in Qatar. Some smoke up to 17 cigarettes a day.
