HMC’s Organ Donation Centre hopes to receive 100,000 donors by year-end
About 45,000 donors have registered with the Qatar Organ Donation Centre at Hamad Medical Corporation for this year. However, the centre is hoping to reach a target of 100,000 donors by the end of 2015, Gulf Times has reported.
In a press statement, HMC’s Organ Donation and Transplantation team had announced the successful completion of seven life-saving surgeries comprising of three liver and four kidney transplantations during the month of February.
Dr. Riadh Fadhil, Director of Qatar Organ Donation Center (Hiba) stated: “We have come a long way since the launch of the organ donation program. In the first year, we would get very few deceased donation consents per year. However, with the support and commitment of the leaders and staff at HMC, deceased as well as living-related donations have increased which is testament to the success of the program.”
Within a span of three years, the Organ Donation Registry has grown tremendously, with the number of donors increasing from 5,000 to 43,000 spanning 108 nationalities including Qataris.
