HMC Organ Donation Center (Hiba) Honors 56 Donors and Families in Annual Donor Event “Celebration of life”

HMC Organ Donation Center (Hiba) Honors 56 Donors and Families in Annual Donor Event “Celebration of life”

Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) Organ Donation Center (Hiba) held an event this week to honor those who have contributed to the organ donation program in Qatar. The event was attended by His Excellency Dr. Abdulla Bin Saleh Al Khulaifi, the Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, who awarded 30 living organ donors and the families of the 26 deceased donors, for their contribution to the health of the nation and the organ donation program.

At the event, which took place at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, six Qatari patients who chose to have their transplant surgery in Doha, rather than travelling abroad were also honored, as were the six Qatari participants from the MESOT Games in Abu Dhabi in 2012 and Istanbul in 2014. In addition 25 national organizations that support the organ donation program were also recognized.

The organ donation program has seen remarkable success in the past few years and through awareness programs, especially the Ramadan awareness campaign, has managed to bring about a large shift in public understanding and perspective of this important topic. This has resulted in a steady increase of registered organ donors and, since the launch of the donor registry in 2012, over 43,000 people have signed as organ donors.

At the event, Dr. Yousuf Al Maslamani, Director of the Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation at HMC spoke about the history of organ donation in Qatar and highlighted the milestones attained through the support of the leaders in the country, including the development of the Doha Donation Accord in 2009.

Dr Riadh Fadhil, Director of the Qatar Organ Donation Center added in his presentation that: “The fairness, equitable distribution of donated organs, unbiased access to transplant services and the respect of dignity and autonomy of all residents in Qatar, irrespective of their nationality, race, and religion, have become the cornerstones of what is now internationally known as the Doha model of organ donation and transplantation.”

Mr. Jamal Al Kaabi also spoke about his experience at the event. “My life was saved due to a kidney donation by a deceased woman. Even though I had the choice of traveling abroad, I decided to stay in Qatar and be on the waiting list for an organ and I am very happy I did, as the level of care and expertise shown by the Qatar Organ Donation and Transplant teams was exceptional. I would like to extend my sincere appreciation and gratitude to the family of the deceased donor and to all HMC teams for saving my life. I felt very proud of our organ donation program when I found out that an Indian patient had been chosen to receive the other kidney from the same donor. His transplant surgery was conducted in the operating theater next door to mine.”

The Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation located in the Hamad General Hospital, and is open daily from 7am-3pm. Call: 44391140/1141.
