Hamad International Airport set to open on a grander scale in mid-2014
Hamad International Airport (HIA) is finally set to begin operations in mid-2014, according to the Chairman of the Steering Committee of the New Doha International Airport (NDIA), H.E. Mr. Abdul Aziz Mohammad Al-Noaimi. The state-of-the-art airport will house a number of facilities including a catering facility spanning over 69000 square metres, the largest in the world, with over 100 retail and F&B outlets capable of serving over 90,000 meals a day.
This opening of the airport comes after previous delays in the past years, including one on April 1 last year prior to which the HIA hosted a soft opening, a chance for residents of Qatar to get a sneak preview of the airport’s facilities. In a press statement issued by the NDIA Steering Committee, Chairman Al-Noaimi attributed these delays to changes requested during construction to expand the project as well as challenges the Committee faced regarding contracts. The airport will now be larger and will have a greater capacity on its opening as compared with the original plan to meet larger transit growth in Qatar.
