[UPDATED] Guide to Qatar National Sports Day 2014: Are you game?

The third annual National Sports Day is just round the corner. February 11, being the second Tuesday of the month, has been declared the National Sports Day and a public holiday for all. But there’s lots happening this year.

Lighting The Torch Doha

Aspire Zone Foundation is inviting famous sports celebrities to participate in a spectacular event, where they will be cycling to generate power to light up The Torch Doha.
Location: The Torch Doha
Time: 4-6pm
Date: February 10

4km Fun Run

Start the day with a fun run around the Aspire precinct. The event is open to all age groups. Participants are required to gather at the Khalifa Stadium VIP entrance which will serve as the starting point. You also receive Aspire giveaways at the end of the race.

3km Corporate Run

Qatar Central Bank (QCB) is organising a 3km run for employees of financial organisations in the country. The race will be held for three age categories – 18-30 years, 31-45 years and 46-60 years. The first ten winners of each category of men and women will receive cash prizes, ranging from QR10,000 for the first place to QR1,000 for the tenth place.
Companies can submit their list of runners until February 6 at QCB headquarters. Registration fee to be paid.
Location: The starting point is the ictQATAR signals and finishes at the Doha Dhows harbour on the Corniche.

Dolphin Energy Doha Dash

This year Doha-ites get a chance to sprint on the Motor GP track at Losail International Circuit, true athlete style.
The races will be divided into four categories:

  • 5km Doha Dash

Age: 12 years and above
Distance: 1 lap of the circuit
Registration fee: QR100
Time: 9.20am
Date: February 11

  • 3km Doha Dash

Age: 8 years and above
Distance: 800×532
Registration fee: QR50
Type: Suitable for families who want to run together.
Time: 9am
Date: February 11

  • 1km Mini Doha Dash

Age: Children aged 5-12 years only.
Registration fee: Free
Type: Children only race
Time: 10.30am
Date: February 11

  • 1km Ladies’ Walk

Age: 5 years and above
Registration fee: Free
Type: Walking, Females only.
Time: 11.25am
Date: February 11

Participants are required to register at least 1.5 hours prior to the start time of their race. You can also register online.

Terry Fox Run Doha

Here’s a chance to help raise funds for cancer research. The Terry Fox Run is back, and is open for all those who want to walk, run, ride or wheel. There will be three races – 3km, 6km and 9km.
Location: College of North Atlantic, Qatar
Time: Registration opens at 9am, race begins 11.30am

Wheels ‘n’ Heels Family Fun Day

Bikes, Skateboards, wheelchair, or just a pair of legs. ROTA is organising its seventh Wheels ‘n’ Heels Family Fun Day, inviting all residents to jog, walk, cycle or wheelchair three kilometres along the Doha Corniche. Funds raised will be utilised to provide quality education to 48 million needy children across Asia.
There will also be a Kids Zone, music and dance performances, and a food zone serving lip-smacking cuisine.

Al Shaqab Horse Riding events

For those who love horses or want to learn more about equestrian sports, Al Shaqab is hosting a range of activities for the day. There will be pony rides, carriage rides, children’s activities, Kids and Adults Running Competitions, and various horse shows and demonstrations.

Katara Sports Day

A variety of sports programmes and events will be held for the whole family at Katara Cultural Village. These include water sports, free sports sessions of table tennis, volleyball, golf, etc and a marathon session. For the full schedule of activities, click here.

QOC Sports Zone

Activities begin early at Qatar Olympics Committee’s (QOC) Sports Zone and have been planned to cater to all age groups including men, women, children and youth.

Traditional Shawaheef Rowing Championship

Watch 10 teams of rowing sporting amateurs and professionals battle it out on the seas in traditional rowing boats.

National Sport Day Merchandise

A range of National Sports Day merchandise such as soft toys, tees and electronics are on sale at the QOC booths in Villaggio, City Center and Landmark Malls.

QU Sports Day

The Student Activities Department at Qatar University is hosting several competitions such as beach volleyball and boating as well as parasailing and other activities for children.

Sahtak Awalan Booth

As part of its Sahtak Awalan (Your Health First) campaign, Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar will be hosting a stand in Qatar Olympics Committee’s Sport Zone. Equipment will be available for public to analyse the risk of major chronic diseases and other metabolic assessments. The stand will also feature a range of health and fitness products including healthy recipes, information about calculating your body mass index, and practical fitness aids like pedometers and skipping ropes with integrated calorie-counters.

Ooredoo’s ‘Game On Qatar’ campaign

Ooredoo will be organising a range of family-friendly Sport Day activities which include ug of war, balloon relay race, ping-pong competitions, volleyball, snakes & ladders, frisbee bowling, and cycling. Ooredoo’s mascot ‘Alrabaa’ will also be making special appearances throughout the day amidst the crowd. There will be a free Ooredoo Park & Ride shuttle service between the Qatar Sports Club and MIA Park.
