For quicker emergency services, remember your house number
The next time you dial 999, keep your building, street and zone number in mind.
In a new awareness campaign launched by the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, residents are urged to remember their house number when calling up emergency services such as ambulances or the civil defence, The Peninsula has reported.
This helps the authorities reach you faster as they can locate you easily through the Geographical Information System. House number references are also handy when availing mail delivery services.
Over 90,000 house number plates have already been installed by The Centre for Geographical Information System (GIS) at the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning (Baladiya) as part of the Qatar Area Referencing System (QARS) project that began in mid-2009. These plates have three numbers: Building number, Zone number and street number.
The first phase of the project involved installing plates on the right side of each building. Buildings on the left side of the road are allotted odd numbers, while those on the right get even numbers. The second phase involved creating the database of every house number installed which includes the Kahramaa number, type of building, old number, survey number, zone and street. New buildings will also be included in the database.
More information on the QARS project can be read here.
