Hello, Summer! Flies and roaches everywhere… here’s your guide to pest control in Qatar

Summer is here and although that means clothes turning crisp and dry within an hour or two out on the clothesline, it’s also the time when the fruit flies, rodents and roaches come out to play.

Rather than spending precious time trying to chase them around and out of your house or office, let the government or one of the many private pest control companies around Qatar do this for you for a fee.

The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning (Baladiya) offers a Pest Control service, which can be availed of by filling out a form on their website. Residents can fill out their Qatar ID number, zone and street number as well as select the types of pests and three preferred dates and either email, fax or hand in the form in person. The Baladiya then decides on a date to implement this service.

Residents can also avail the Pest Control service through the Baladiya’s mobile application along with a host of other services that the organization provides such as tree cutting, sewage removal, workers’ housing, unclogging drainage systems as well as providing trash containers in different areas.

Marketing Executive Wesley Solomon from Verminex Pest Control Company says that most complaints they receive during the summer are about cockroaches, mosquitoes, flies and bed bugs. An official from Qatar Pest Control stated that bed bugs are a common problem around office spaces. “The types of pests that infest different areas depends on the hygiene of the building – how clean people keep them. We also receive a lot of calls about common house flies and fruit flies, which we can control the spread of but not entirely eliminate,” said Solomon. “We have to visit the site to determine what is causing these infestations to get rid of them,” he added.

A few professional exterminator companies JustHere contacted charge on an average between QR300 and QR550 for a standard three-bedroom apartment or villa. For offices or larger spaces, the rates are based on the area of the facility.

Gels and fumigation (spray treatments) are the two most common solutions that pest control companies provide. The official from Qatar Pest Control reports that gels are more effective and some companies price these higher than fumigation sprays. “They are usually used in hard-to-reach areas such as inside cupboards, cabinets or in spaces between doors and are recommended for areas where children are present,” he added.

The Baladiya recommends taking the following steps as a precaution against exposure to pesticides and pest control chemicals:
  1. Keep pesticides away from the skin and eyes. In case of contact with any part of the skin, wash it with water and soap. Wash eyes with cold water several times immediately.
  2. Avoid breathing fumes, dust and pesticide sprays.
  3. Avoid smoking, eating, or drinking during the process of control, taking in mind the washing of hands and face with soap and water before smoking.
  4. Keep children and animals away from areas that have been treated with pesticides.
  5. Do not keep food, cooking utensils and tableware in places that will be treated with pesticides; destroy any materials that you suspect might be contaminated.
  6. Avoid contamination of surfaces that touch food with pesticides and in the event of contamination should be washed with soap and water.
  7. Remove all personal belongings and mattresses from places that will be treated with pesticides, and in the event of contamination should be washed with soap and water. Expose a contaminated mattress to direct sunlight for a period 24 to 48 hours.
  8. Do not use insecticide-treated areas for between 24 to 48 hours; keep them ventilated after washing contaminated surfaces.
  9. Avoid using liquid pesticides on electrical systems directly.
  10. If symptoms of pesticide poisoning arise, transfer the affected person to the nearest health centre immediately.
The key to preventing unwanted insects and rodents is keeping your surroundings clean is through good hygiene and regular maintenance. Here are some ways you can keep your house or living spaces clean:
  1. Take out garbage everyday and make sure that there is no residue of food leftover in the trash can.
  2. Insects and other pests thrive on moisture, so make sure you wipe up all spills immediately, especially juice and other sticky food and drink.
  3. Store all ripe fruit in the refrigerator, especially during the summer to prevent flies and fruit flies hovering around them
  4. Wash your dishes daily after use; if you cannot wash them immediately, let them at least soak in soapy water until you can wash them.
  5. Vacuum and sweep your floors and carpets regularly; make sure the kitchen and bathrooms are dry.
  6. To prevent bed bugs:
    1. Always check used or rented furniture before you use them.
    2. Check cracks in plaster and any peeling wallpaper
    3. Look under the bed and near the headboards and bed frame
    4. If you suspect you have bed bugs on your belongings, wash clothes in very hot water and store them in a sealed plastic bag until you can
