Eateries warned against use of plastic and other hazardous food packaging materials
Food sellers in Qatar have been warned against the use of hazardous packaging materials such as polyethylene bags and newspapers.
The Qatar General Organisation for Standards and Metrology has issued a statement asking all food producers, distributors and vendors especially restaurants and cafeterias, to abide by the safety guidelines offood packaging and serving, the QNA has reported.
Prior to this, the Ministry of Environment had banned the use of foam as packaging materials, except for cold food.
As per a new rule issued by the Cabinet, packets should clearly state if it is meant for packaging hot or cold food.
For example, plastic and foam used for cold food packaging must carry the note printed in sky blue colour in Arabic and English. Meanwhile, paper cups and boxes used for packaging hot food must pass a ‘heavy metal test’ for safety check.
