Diabetes awareness programmes announced to help residents better understand the disease
A survey conducted by Qatari authorities in 2011 found that despite having good awareness about the severity and threat of diabetes in general terms, most people in Qatar lacked proper understanding of diabetes-related complications. The International Diabetes Federation, in a report, states that Qatar has the highest rate of diabetes in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Celebrating World Diabetes Day, a few events have been planned around the city to promote awareness and education about the illness.
To raise awareness, every patient diagnosed at Hamad General Hospital’s new Diabetes Center has a diabetes patient educator. These educators are specialist nurses and certified diabetes professionals who counsel diabetic patients on how to live well with the disease.
