Counterfeit products seized; 147 people charged for violating intellectual property rights
About 51,000 counterfeit electric products were seized and 147 people booked for violating intellectual property rights, during a five-day raid of shops and warehouses across the country.
The operation named ‘Shaheen’ was conducted by the Ministry of Interior’s Arab and International Police Communication Department in co-operation with Interpol, and is considered to be the first of its kind in the region.
Among the fake goods confiscated, 51,000 were electrical items including lights, electric welding ribbons and fuses; 20,000 fake auto spare parts including tyres, brake pads and air filters; 31,000 expired food items; and 4,000 litres of expired sterilisation gels, the Gulf Times has reported.
Officials are in talks to organise successive operations – ‘Shaheen 2’ and ‘Shaheen 3’ – in the near future that will encompass neighbouring countries in the region.
