Is your company accommodation getting too expensive for you?
As the housing rents in Qatar continue to rise exponentially, it’s the expatriate workers lodged in company accommodation who are the worst affected.
According to a report in The Peninsula, many expatriates are giving up their company-provided accommodation to avoid housing allowance deductions from their salaries. (Read the full report here.)
Housing allowance constitutes a considerable portion in an employee’s salary structure. Many residents have complained that despite the rising cost of living, salaries have remained stagnant for years. For those staying in company accommodation, companies tend to deduct a larger portion as housing allowance, each time the rents increase, without increasing the gross salary.
As a result, expatriates prefer to find their own accommodation as a cheaper alternative. However, the struggle for finding cheap accommodation in Qatar is a long one. The situation gets worse when it comes to bachelors who are often denied a space in “family-only” buildings. (Read JustHere’s report on this trend here.)
