80% road accidents in Qatar caused by use of mobile phones
Over 80% of road accidents in Qatar are due to use of mobile phones, the Ministry of Interior has said.
Mobile phone usage is the leading cause of distracted driving in Qatar. To curb this dangerous trend, the Qatar Mobility Innovations Centre (QMIC) has launched a mobile app called Salamtek, which translates to “your safety” in Arabic.
As reported by Gulf Times, the app lets motorists lock their mobile phones upon reaching a certain set speed, thereby reducing distractions. The app would be available within a month on the Google app store.
According to figures released by Qatar Monthly Statistics, a total of 28,297 traffic accidents were reported for the month of September. The highest cases were registered at Madinat Khalifa Traffic Department (23%), followed by Airport (18.7%) and Al Mamoura (18.3%) zones.
However, Gulf Times further reported that the percentage of road accident victims admitted to hospitals has declined to 45%.
