More than 208,000 new expats in Qatar in 2013
The total population of Qatar has increased by more than 208,000 persons between December 2013 and December 2012, indicating the arrival of foreign workers and their families, figures released by the Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics revealed. Of these new arrivals, nearly 7% are females.
As of the end of December 2013, the total population of Qatar at 2.045 million has grown 11.35% since the previous year and has crossed the 2 million mark that the Qatar Economic Outlook 2013-2014 forecasted.
This however, may not reflect the true total population because many people have been on vacation during December, as a decrease of nearly 23,000 persons from the previous month.
It is for the first time that the number of women has crossed the 500,000 mark, peaking at 533,674 in November 2013. Men still outnumber women, and constitute 74.81% of the population.
These monthly figures do not include Qatari nationals or non-Qataris with valid Qatar residence permits who are outside the country’s borders on December 31, 2013.
Since Qatar won the 2022 FIFA bid, the country has witnessed a huge surge in the number of people who have moved to the country. At the end of 2010, there were only around 1.63 million people in Qatar; this rose to above 1.7 million the following year and to 1.83 million at the end of 2012.
