Fish stock affected by rising sea temperatures in the region

There has been a steep rise in the number of fishes dying in the Qatari waters, which experts say is a result of high sea temperatures. About 18 varieties of fishes have been affected by the current climatic conditions of the region, Qatar Tribune has reported.

According to the report, a hydrographic survey was carried out by a team comprising specialists from the Ministry of Environment’s (MoE) Fisheries Department and the Management of Environmental Monitoring Cell, Qatar University’s (QU) Environmental Studies Centre (ESC) and the Ministry of Interior’s (MoI) Coasts and Borders Security Department.

The findings confirmed the correlation between fish mortality and high sea temperature and low dissolved oxygen levels. A team member also pointed out that this phenomenon of fish mortality was common during the last week of August, and occurred every one or two years.
