Vision Zero Qatar-Sweden Forum: Road accident injuries result to 10% of deaths in the world

The Vision Zero Qatar-Sweden Forum (Knowledge Sharing – Best Evidence Practice between Qatar and Sweden) concluded at Ritz Carlton Hotel on Monday, May 10, presenting wide range of road safety plans with more combined efforts.

The second sessions were started by the opening remarks of Ewa Polano, Swedish Ambassador to Doha. During her speech she emphasized that they were delighted with the Qatari society on the development and fast growth that managed to achieve a lot in the field of construction, safety and readiness to host many international conferences and events, which reflected the unique situation in the Middle East.

During the POWERTalk sessions that followed, Dr. Lars Englund, Chief Medical Officer of Road and Rail Department, Swedish Transport Agency and Chairman of ITMA (Sweden) said there are over four million people in the world dying due to car accidents, which is more than the death due to infectious diseases such as malaria or heart disease. “Many countries are exposed to fatal traffic accidents, and in Sweden we try to get as much as possible to the best way for the safety of vehicles, as we would like to share this with the State of Qatar,” he added.

Dr. Ahmad Zarour, Senior Consultant at Trauma Department at the Hamad Medical Corporation said that the accident injuries has emerged a big problem that affects more than five million people a year around the world, and 10% of these injuries may result to 10% of the dead in the world. In every five seconds one person dies in the world because of serious road accidents.
