HMC’s Blood Donor Centre achieves 100% voluntary blood donation rate

Under the patronage of His Excellency Abdulla bin Khalid Al Qahtani, the Minister of Public Health, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has announced it will honour blood donors at a celebratory event scheduled to coincide with the World Blood Donor Day on 14 June. More than 400 blood donors and a number of local organisations will be honoured during the event.

Mr. Ali Al Khater, Executive Director of HMC’s Corporate Communications Department said, “Blood donation helps save millions of lives every year. It gives patients with life-threatening diseases in need of blood transfusion a chance to live longer and improve the quality of their lives,” he said adding: “We are very grateful for the widespread community support for blood donation in Qatar.”

According to Mrs. Siddiqa Al Mahmoudi, Medical Director of Blood Donor Center, the Blood Donor Center has achieved a 100% voluntary blood donation rate – the highest in the region, for the fifth consecutive year.

Donor Requirements

In order to donate blood, you need to meet the following health and physical requirements:

  • Be between 18 and 60 years of age
  • Be in good health overall and feel well on the day of donation
  • Have no chronic heart, lung or circulatory diseases
  • Weigh 50 kilograms or above
  • You should not suffer from high blood pressure, use insulin or be anaemic.
  • Inform the unit if you are taking medications or bring a list of all the medications on the day of donation
  • Pregnant, menstruating or breastfeeding women should not donate any blood
