High-speed passenger trains to run between Qatar and other GCC countries

By 2030, Qatar’s railway system will include special long-distance passenger trains that will run between Qatar and other GCC countries. The trains will be designed to reach a maximum speed of 220-350km per hour.

In a report by Gulf Times, Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) managing director Abdulla Abdulaziz Al-Subaie said that Qatar’s railway system would help “accelerate GCC’s economic growth”.

The country is currently witnessing construction works for the Doha Metro and the Lusail City Light Rail Transit projects. Work includes laying of nearly 143km of operational tracks with 35 turnouts, one station, three freight yards, one inter-modal yard, 26 bridges and 59 culverts.

In the fourth and final phase of construction, the railway network will be expanded to include lines to the rest of the GCC countries, as well as the new port and Hamad International Airprot, the report further stated. There are also plans of introducing freight trains of speeds nearing 120km per hour.

The trains would run on electricity, which according to Al-Subaie, will reduce the dependency on fossil fuels.
