Call to install mobile phone jammers in vehicles to reduce road accidents

To curb the rising number of traffic accidents in Qatar, the Central Municipal Council (CMC) has recommended the installation of mobile phone jammers that would “make phone calls unavailable while the vehicle is moving”, according to a report in the Gulf Times.

Figures from the Ministry of Interior have revealed that over 80% of road accidents in Qatar are due to use of mobile phones. A total of 27,609 accidents were registered in the month of November, as per figures released by the Qatar Monthly Statistics.

In December last year, Qatar Mobility Innovations Centre (QMIC) launched a mobile app called Salamtek, which translates to “your safety” in Arabic. The app lets motorists lock their mobile phones upon reaching a certain set speed, thereby reducing distractions.

Do you use mobile phones while driving?
