Indian expats in Qatar are urgently required to apply for machine readable passports

The International Civil Aviation Organisation recently announced the phasing out of all non-machine readable passports (MRPs) by November 24, 2015, following which the Indian Embassy has urged all Indian citizens to apply for a machine readable passport. Nationals travelling on a non-MRP passport would be denied visa or entry to foreign countries starting November 25.

Non-machine readable passports comprise passports issued before 2001 or during the mind-1990s with a validity of 20 years, in addition to all handwritten passports with pasted photographs, according to a Gulf Times report. It’s only since 2001 that the Indian Government has been issuing MRPs.

For more details related to passport services, visit www.passportindia.gov.in or contact the national call centre at 1800-258-1800 (toll-free). The public notice can be viewed here.
