Getting behind the wheel: What you need to know about buying a car in Qatar

New to Qatar? Planning to get a car? In this five-part series, JustHere will guide you through the different aspects of owning a car in Qatar.

In our second part, we discuss about buying a car.

Buying a car is very common in Qatar because of how relatively cheap it is compared to other cities in the world apart from which the cost of fuel is almost unbelievable! There are many places you can buy a car from here. There is a huge market for it because cars have become more of an accessory in Qatar, their necessity is sometimes preceded the fact that they could be looked at as a status symbol.

When buying a car remember that negotiation is the key. You could get a good deal, extras on the vehicle of your choice like tints, reverse parking sensors and more. Make sure you ask a lot of questions, look around for good deals and promotions before deciding on the dealer and car.

Most major cars brands have dealerships here like Toyota, Lexus, Chrysler, Ford, Peugeot, Volvo, Honda, Skoda, GMC, Subaru, Audi, Nissan, Infinity, Jeep, Bentley, Lamborghini and more.

To buy a car you need:

  • A residence permit
  • Car Insurance
  • Statement of your finances/agreement with a bank or company
  • NOC from your sponsor
Buying a second hand in Qatar

There are 2 ways you can buy a second hand car in Doha

1.         Buying it from a licensed dealer or a car showroom

This is generally more expensive that buying a used car from a private owner but you would be paying that extra amount for peace of mind. The licensed dealer will have made sure that the car is completely in order; checked if the car has been coming to them regularly for servicing and so on. The dealers also transfer the registration of the car in your name so all that is left for you to do is choose your car and then go and pick it up after the payments have been made.

2.         Buying the car from a private vehicle owner

You will be able to find a lot of sellers online, fliers at local grocery stores and shopping marts and sometimes you will see people driving around in the cars they want to sell with their contact information noticeably pasted on the car. The negotiations and sale is completely up to you. Once the transfer has taken place, you and the seller will have to visit the Traffic department to get the registration of the vehicle transferred to your name.

Be warned

  • All the traffic fines of the car will have to be paid off before transferring the registration
  • Depending on what is decided during the negotiations, the appropriate fees will be paid at the Traffic Department and the registration is transferred
  • Transfer of registration involves a fee of QR100 which is payable by credit card
  • Beware of online scams. There have been cases of used car racketeering that has affected more than a few buyers. Do a thorough check of the vehicle before you buy it. Read the experience of one such buyer here.
