Increasing number of children affected by diabetes in Qatar; Take your child for a free screening this weekend

About 1,000 children with diabetes are being currently managed at the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) Diabetes Unit. From these, approximately 150 receive insulin regularly through the insulin pump therapy.

These figures are a clear indication of the rising number of cases of diabetes among children and young adults in Qatar.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs as a result of increased levels of glucose (blood sugar) in the blood. The condition is broadly categorised into two types:

  • Type 1, in which the body does not produce any insulin, and a hormone is required to break sugar into energy needed for daily life.
  • Type 2, in which the body fails to respond to insulin.

HMC recently hosted the first Childhood Diabetes Symposium in Qatar. In a press statement, Dr. Ahmed El Awwa, Consultant Pediatric Endocrine and Diabetes at HMC said: “The most prevalent type of diabetes in children is type 1, which is found in 90% of children affected with diabetes; these children require insulin treatment at all times.”

However, the number of children affected by type 2 diabetes is also beginning to rise, particularly with the increase of obesity and improper diets among the youth.

HMC is organising free public screenings this weekend. Activities include diabetes education, dietary education and blood glucose monitoring by HMC staff.
Venue: City Center Mall, West Bay
Date: 28-29 November
Time: 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

For more information on diabetes and related health issues, visit the HMC’s dedicated website.
