HMC: Most pedestrian accidents in Qatar occur on Thursdays in the evenings

On the Occasion of World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, commemorated on the third Sunday of November, every year, the Ministry of Interior’s Traffic Department held a road safety forum yesterday.

During the forum, Dr. Rafael J. Consunji, Injury Prevention Director, Trauma Surgery Section of Hamad General Hospital (HGH), said most pedestrian accidents occurred on Thursdays in the evening, especially among expatriates. According to him, pedestrians wearing dark dresses while walking at night were more prone to accidents. Another reason was the difference in traffic movement and system in Qatar and home countries of expatriates.

The following statistics were revealed by officials, as reported by The Peninsula:

  • About 56 pedestrians died due to night road accidents
  • 53% of the victims were Nepalese
  • 19 of the road accidents in 2012 and 2013 occurred in the Industrial Area mostly at night.
  • 71% of the pedestrians died at the accident site
