Katara Art Center bids adieu at closing event

It was a grim evening at the Katara Art Center, as patrons gathered together to say a final goodbye to the community art center.

Katara Art Center (KAC), that opened in mid-2012 by founder Tariq Al Jaidah, announced their closure early this month due to the lack of financial support and the reallocation of their space at Katara for other ventures. KAC will be closing its doors permanently on 30 June 2014.

Addressing the gathering at today’s Support Event, KAC’s Artistic Director & Curator, Mayssa Fattouh spoke of the need of art centres for nurturing local talent. “Without grassroots art centers and ome grown galleries, there is little scope for local artists. They are needed to bridge gaps between students and hidden talents.”

Don’t miss

Before it shuts doors, KAC is running one last exhibition titled ‘On A Journey: Spanish Architecture in the Arab World’ that showcases projects by Spanish architecture firms and companies in Arab countries. The exhibition will run until 18 June, 2014.

KAC’s bookstore is offering 30% and 50% discounts on all their merchandise as part of a liquidation sale.

She further added that KAC has no intention of competing with exisiting cultural bodies in the country, but to only promote art. “We need to collaborate together rather than challenge each other.”

In its two years of operation, KAC has held over 120 events has worked with over 60 artists. For local artists, the centre was the only platform to showcase their work. Doha-based Sudanese political cartoonist Khalid Al-Baih was one such artist who held an exhibition ‘The Worst Calamity Makes One Laugh’ last year. Expressing his gratitude to the art centre, he said “KAC gave me self-confidence as an artist by showcasing my work. We really appreciate what KAC has done. It will be hard to fill the gap.”
