Films
DFI Screening: The Square
the squareThe Egyptian Revolution has been an ongoing rollercoaster over the past two-and-a-half years. Through the news, we only get a glimpse of the bloodiest battles, an election, or a million-man march. At the beginning of July, 2013, we witnessed the second president deposed within the space of three years. ‘The Square’ is an immersive experience that transports the viewer deep into the intense emotional drama and personal stories behind the news. It is the inspirational story of young people claiming their rights, struggling against multiple forces, in their fight to create a society of conscience. (Source: DFI)

Similar to nature consisting of many dimensions, the artistic and literary oeuvre of Etel Adnan contains many different aspects. Through the exploration of this artist’s multidimensionality, the exhibition will highlight the diversity in her work. Providing an extensive overview, the display at Mathaf will include Adnan’s paintings, drawings, leporellos, tapestries, writings and films from the 1960s onwards. [Source: Mathaf]

Mona Hatoum: Turbulence
mona hatoumThe exhibition Mona Hatoum: Turbulence brings to the forefront the diversity of Mona Hatoum’s work over the last 30 years. Curated by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath of Art Reoriented, the exhibition’s premise builds on the artist’s topical work Turbulence (2012), a 4 x 4 metre square composed of thousands of glass marbles laid directly onto the floor. Placed exactly at the centre of the exhibition, this installation lies at the heart of a linear but non-chronological trajectory whereby a number of unexpected juxtapositions echo the complexity through which the artist has managed to challenge, and at times disturb, our experience of the ordinary.
