Teach for Qatar to fill gaps in independent schools

Teach for Qatar to fill gaps in independent schools

Ten independent schools have partnered for the pilot phase of the Teach for Qatar initiative that launches tomorrow, an official of Teach for Qatar (TFQ) told JustHere.

The group is a member of the global Teach For All network spanning 32 countries that was launched to provide quality education in classrooms. As part of this initiative, professional recruited for teaching positions, referred to as ‘Fellows’, are required to commit two years towards teaching in partner schools.

TFQ Fellows will be assigned to teach one of the three subjects – Maths, English or Science, to preparatory grade students. The recruitment phase is still underway, and so the total number of applicants cannot be disclosed at the moment.

There are certain prerequisites that have applicants have to bear in mind. These include:

  • Applicants must be a graduate, or must pass out by May 2014 if currently enrolled in university.
  • Undergraduate cumulative GPA must be 3.00 out of 4.00
  • Working professionals must not have more than four years of work experience.
  • Fluency in English and Arabic.

Deadlines for online application are March 23, 2014 and May 10, 2014. Click here to view the schedule of the application process.

Qatar’s independent school system has faced backlash for quite some time now. Last year, over 7000 students had failed their second term examinations – a startling figure that has raised many questions about the quality of education being imparted in these schools as well as the qualifications of teachers hired. An SEC study in 2011 revealed that more than 30% of school teachers in Qatar were not qualified to teach.

While amendments in the education system will have to be tackled with urgency, Teach for Qatar is one step in that direction.
