UPDATE: Qatar responds to KSA, UAE and Bahrain withdrawing ambassadors from its territory

Expressing resentment towards Qatar’s decision to not sign the security pact, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain has announced the withdrawal of their ambassadors to Qatar.

The security pact was an agreement signed by GCC members on November 23, that states the “non-interference in the internal affairs of any of the GCC countries, either directly or indirectly, and not to support any party that threatens the security and stability of the GCC countries whether organisations, or individuals, either through direct security work or by political influence, and not to support the hostile media,” Gulf News has reported.

With Qatar failing to implement the agreement, three months after signing it, the three countries announced the withdrawal of their diplomatic envoys from the country, starting March 5, 2014, in a joint statement, describing their action as necessary “to protect their security and stability”.

Update: Qatar’s cabinet has issued a statement in response to this move:

has nothing to do with the interests, security and stability of GCC peoples but rather a difference in positions on issues out of the Cooperation council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC)

However, Qatar added that it would not reciprocate with a similar move as it is keen on maintaining ‘brotherly ties’ with fellow-GCC states, according to the QNA.
