About 800 citizens shortlisted for military service

The Ministry of Defence has rounded up names of 700-800 government employees from various ministries eligible for the compulsory military service.

Training begins next month, and individuals will be informed by telephone or by letters. They will also be handed military uniforms.

According to Brigadier Mohammed Misfer Al Ayadi, Commander of Student Training Center at the Ministry of Defence, the names of individuals have been carefully selected in a way to not impede the flow of work in the ministries. If so, “the concerned ministry can request a postponement of the service for that individual,” he said in a report in The Peninsula.

Last week, the Emir HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani issued a new law for the military service, according to which citizens aged 18 to 35 years who do not enrol for the service will not be eligible for jobs in the government and non-government sectors, or own a license for business.

The current military training centre in Al Shamal is expected to undergo an expansion to accommodate more trainees.
