[UPDATED] Qatar 2022 World Cup in winter?

FIFA General Secretary Jerome Valcke has said that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will not be held in summer, but later in the year, when the weather is more akin to European spring.

The BBC reports him speaking to Radio France on this.

This is the latest in the debate on Qatar as a world cup host.

Its poor labour rights record and the much-feared ‘summer heat’ are two main points in the arguments against it hosting it.

“If you play between 15 November and the end of December that’s the time when the weather conditions are best, when you can play in temperatures equivalent to a warm spring season in Europe, averaging 25 degrees.

“That would be perfect for playing football,” he said.

Update: An official Qatar 2022 statement said: “During the FIFA Executive Committee meeting in October it was agreed that FIFA would enter a period of consultation on the ideal time of year to host the World Cup in Qatar– with a recommendation expected after the World Cup in Brazil. We await the outcome of this consultation period. We will be ready to host the World Cup regardless of the outcome.”
