Qatar International Book Fair: A treat for Arabic readers and little choice in English

Cassey Oliveira

The Qatar International Book Fair is open and on till December 14, and like in past editions, the focus is on Arabic literature. From the many exhibitors on board, only a handful of them are selling books in English.

For Arabic readers, the fair exhibits a rich collection of novels (fiction and non-fiction), cookbooks, self-help books and religious texts by publishers from Syria, Egypt, Kuwait, UAE and Saudi Arabia.

Meanwhile, for those interested in books in English, Bloomsbury Qatar Foundation Publishing, Family Bookshop and the UK-Qatar 2013 pavilion have a decent selection.

Regardless of language, the fair addresses young readers’ needs. You will find plenty of children stories and fables from popular authors such as Enid Blyton and Charles Dickens. There are also plenty of activities through the day, including art and story telling workshops. Some of these workshops are organised by the UK pavilion, Childhood Cultural Centre, and the 1st Child Book festival, a festival running parallel with the Book Fair. Click here to view the schedule of activities at the Story telling Zone of the UK pavilion.

Since the United Kingdom (UK) is the guest of honour for this year, literary enthusiasts have a great opportunity to interact with writers and fuel their literary passion with the variety of activities workshops that the UK pavilion has organised for all age groups. And for those unable to attend the fair, here’s a list of places where you can find good books in Qatar.

The Fair is open until 14 December, daily from 9am-1pm and 4pm-10pm. Friday – 4pm-10pm
