First World Cup 2022 modular stadium in Al Wakrah

First World Cup 2022 modular stadium in Al Wakrah

The Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee (Q22) has unveiled plans for the first of the several stadia planned – the 40,000-seat Al Wakrah Stadium and Precinct – that will host matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar. In a release to the press and social media enthusiasts, it said the Al Wakrah Stadium and Precinct is inspired by the dhow, “weaving together Qatar’s past with its progressive vision for the future.”

The Wakrah Stadium, situated 15kms from Doha, will be capable of hosting group stage, round of 16 and quarterfinal matches during the 2022 FIFA.

The stadium will have a “natural grass pitch cooled to an optimal temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. Spectator stands will be cooled to a supremely comfortable 24-28 degrees Celsius.”

Built to receive GSAS 4 Star and LEED Gold certifications, the stadium’s modular, 20,000-seat upper tier and associated cooling systems will be disassembled and distributed to developing nations that lack sporting infrastructure. The remaining 20,000-seat stadium will serve as the home of Al Wakrah Sports Club, an official statement said.

As announced during the bid itself, several of the stadia will be built with modular elements, able to be deconstructed after 2022, to avoid ‘white elephants’. Once deconstructed, a total of 170,000 seats will be donated to the developing world.

The stadium will be located next to Al Wakra Hospital and will be well-connected to the upcoming metro and various shuttle services to ease traffic congestion during the tournament. This stadium will become the official stadium of the district of Al Wakra, while the current stadium will be used for other purposes.

Construction of the stadium is scheduled to start in 2015 but the area will be fenced off in January 2014. The precinct of the stadium will house a school, a multipurpose indoor arena, a Mosque, parks and a hospitality vocational training centre. The perimeter of the stadium will be naturally cooled and will have cycle paths and shaded footpaths as the ones in Aspire Zone.
