These dragons tread water; Get your paddles ready, Qatar
Dragon boat racing is about 2000 years old, and there is an interesting Chinese legend on how it started (go Google it). Jeff Ching brought it to Qatar, launching the club Doha Dragons, this September. The first dragon boat paddle was held on 5 October. In less than two months, the club has 20 members. One team, the Phillipine Dragon Warriors has mostly experienced paddlers and the other team has room for a few more to join.
A dragon boat seats 20 paddlers plus a helmsman and a coach when training or a drummer during races.
The group trains twice a week at the Grand Hyatt and is planning to increase soon to 3 times a week.
Expect to be exhausted, says a regular paddler. “Despite it appearing as if we are using mostly our arms it is a full body workout. Our large back and leg muscles do the majority of the work and our arms and shoulders do the rest.”
To join a practice session, places need to be reserved (email@example.com or Jeff: +974 7044 3823).
Cost: First two sessions are free. After which members have to make a bi-annual contribution of QR800. Membership forms are available here.
Equipment: Provided by the club.
