Female-driven taxis: High demand; short supply

Female-driven taxis: High demand; short supply

The female-driven taxi service launched two months ago sees high demand, but falls short on supply.

JustHere spoke to agents at Al Ijarah, the Mowasalat franchisee who operates this service.

The company is currently trying to recruit more female drivers to deal with the shortage. There are only 20 such limousine taxis currently.

Almost all taxis are reserved on monthly contracts. They are primarily hired for school pick-ups and drops, family trips, university pick-ups and drops and by working women who need services to and fro form their workplace on a monthly basis.

The monthly contracts have a waiting list and these taxis may or may not be available to provide ad-hoc services. “Each female driver is booked for, on average, three contracts. Daily bookings are congested, and only if a female driver has about two free hours, in between her contract services, can we provide her for a day appointment,” an agent at the booking centre said.

This taxi service is available only between 6am and 11pm. Only women and women with young male children (family) may use the women-driven taxis.

Bookings can be made on 8004488. This service has a flat rate, as follows:

Single trip within Doha QR50
Single trip to Wakra QR100
Single trip to Al Khor QR150
Single trip to Dukhan QR200
Full day charge for 8 hours within Doha QR500
Monthly contract for daily services
(two-way pick up)
(one-way pick up)

We haven’t yet received response from Mowasalat on whether the service would be offered by other franchisees.

Have you hired one of these taxis? What’s your experience been?
