New underground facility near Souq Waqif to ease parking woes

New underground facility near Souq Waqif to ease parking woes

Qatar’s popular meeting spot Souq Waqif, which is also the country’s most crowded spot, will soon have a multi-storey underground parking facility that can accommodate 2,000 cars at a time.
According to a report in The Peninsula, the new parking facility is being built beneath a plot of land across the Corniche that once housed the headquarters of Capital Police. Above it, a public park is being planned that will also have an open-air theatre. There will be several subways connecting the new facility to the souq.

At present, there are four parking lots that visitors have access to:

  • The underground parking facility just across Souq Waqif near Emiri Diwan which accommodates 750 cars at a time.
  • The parking lot facing Msheireb, and the other facing the Fanar Mosque which together accommodate 740 cars at a time. These are paid parking spots that charge QR5 for the first hour, and QR3 for every subsequent hour.
  • The Souq Najada car parking facility that can accommodate 600 cars.

Finding parking has always been a hassle, not just near Souq Waqif, but in other places as well. According to official figures, 70,000 new vehicles were registered in 2011 and 88,000 more in 2012; 105,000 new driving licenses were issued in 2011 and another 108,000 last year. One thing is clear – traffic is increasing, but the infrastructure to support it is still lacking here. Read JustHere’s earlier report on parking spaces in Qatar.
