Register as organ donors this Ramadan

Register as organ donors this Ramadan

Hamad Medical Cooperation’s (HMC) Organ Donation campaign attracted over 1,000 people last year to register as donors, and it hopes to achieve the same with this year’s campaign.

According to a report in Peninsula, as part of the campaign, HMC staff will be present at around 20 locations across the country everyday between 7pm and 11pm, during the Holy Month of Ramadan, to help people register and understand the importance of organ donation. The campaign will run for another 10 days after Ramadan ends.

A healthy individual of any age and a good medical history is considered a potential donor. Organs and tissues that one can donate include: heart, kidneys, lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, corneas, skin, tendons, bone, and heart valves. In Qatar, there’s a major need for kidney transplants. This is due to the to high incidences of diabetes among people that leads to kidney failure.

Donate, and be honoured

The Doha Donation Accord was established in September 2010 as a collaboration between the Supreme Council of Health (SCH), HMC and the Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group. The Accord recognises the act of donation as a heroic one, and hence grants the following benefits to every donor:

  • Organ donors and their families receive the Medal of Honour by the highest authorities in Qatar.
  • HMC offers compensation in case of wage deducted for working days that were utilised for the organ donation process.
  • Living donors receive medical insurance throughout life, compensation for any health problems if they occur, and life insurance.
  • Families of the deceased donor will receive any kind of travel as well as social security support.

More details on the Doha Donation Accord as well as organ donation in general can be found on the HMC website. Click here.

Those interested can register at Qatar Center for Organ Transplantation located in the Hamad General Hospital, and is open daily from 7am-3pm. Call: 44391140/1141.
