At new airport preview, not all is revealed

Last month, JustHere offered a summary on some interesting facts and figures of the new Hamad International Airport, based on a release from NDIA Steering Committee. Today, we were invited for an exclusive press preview of the stunning new airport, but were left a little disappointed with the fact that we were not shown all the facilities available at the airport. Also, no additional information was divulged to the media other than what was shared earlier. The little we were shown was impressive. Here are some pictures for what you can expect when the airport officially opens its doors this April. What do you think?

  • The NDIA Steering Committee members hold specially designed and framed boarding passes that symbolise the first passenger check-in.
  • While addressing the guests and media, NDIA Steering Committee Chairman and Chairman of Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, HE Abdul Aziz Al Noaimi said, “Today we gather to celebrate the accomplishment of the NDIA Steering Committee staff to While addressing the guests and media, NDIA Steering Committee Chairman and Chairman of Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, HE Abdul Aziz Al Noaimi said, “Today we gather to celebrate the accomplishment of the NDIA Steering Committee staff to create a world-class airport that meets the demands of the rapidly evolving aviation needs combined with the leading-edge technology. • In April, the HIA will welcome about a dozen passenger airlines as launch carriers while cargo operations will commence by March. By second half of the year, HIA will welcome the national carrier Qatar Airways to its new home and over 30 million passengers will be able to travel to the world’s new aviation hub.

  • The passenger terminal 1 houses 150 check-in counters including 14 first class check-in counters and 16 business class check-in counters “The HIA goes beyond the definition of a traditional airport. Its luxurious ambience is enhanced by resort quality facilities, posh hotels, spas, swimming pools and leisure options like a squash court to allow passengers to relax, refresh and rejuvenate themselves in between flights. It is one of the few public spaces where people can enjoy a museum experience. Handpicked ancient and contemporary art is hand-picked and showcased in a brilliant architectural centre. Design, substance and safety intersect to create an unparalleled, never seen before passenger experience,” added Al Noaimi.

  • We were amongst the first worshippers to attend the Noon Prayer within the Public Mosque located at the passenger terminal complex. The mosque plaza covers an area of 2,100 sq m and includes a 35 m minaret.

  • The mosque has been built to architecturally echo the water theme that runs through the airport. The sunshine that falls through the gently domed roof illuminates the prayer area, offering an alternating pattern of light and shadow.

  • With a length of 4850 meters, the Eastern Runway is one of the longest runways in the world.

  • Standing tall with a height of 90 m, the crescent-shaped Air Traffic Control tower will become the iconic structure of the HIA.
